The Alpine Lakes Wilderness is beautiful, wild, and incredibly rugged. It’s also a place where Fred Beckey established a deep history.
Fred spent decades pioneering routes and scaling the granite peaks surrounding Colchuck Lake.
But keeping these fragile alpine environments pristine takes more than just admiration.
It takes infrastructure.
The jaw-dropping granite and alpine beauty that Fred Beckey helped to introduce to the world now faces record-breaking crowds. High-traffic wilderness needs proper waste management to protect water sources and local wildlife. Without proper facilities at critical trailheads and bivy sites like Colchuck Lake, this fragile landscape suffers drastically.
This is why Fred Beckey LLC is proud to support the Leavenworth Mountain Association in funding this year’s maintenance of the toilet facility at Colchuck Lake.
Toilets aren't glamorous, but they are absolutely essential to keeping our public lands wild.
Because Colchuck Lake sits directly in the watershed supplying the Wenatchee River valley, proper toilets are not just a convenience—they are a critical shield protecting downstream drinking water from contamination.
The Impact on Your Drinking Water
When you support sanitation projects in the high alpine, you protect everyone downstream.
Direct Watershed Protection: Colchuck Lake feeds into Mountaineer Creek and Icicle Creek, which supply clean drinking water to thousands of homes and farms.
Human Waste Hazard: High-altitude, rocky soil cannot naturally break down waste, leading to harmful bacteria and pathogens washing into the water supply.
Collective Responsibility: As climbing and hiking popularity spikes, our combined footprint requires active management to prevent a public health crisis.
👉 How you can help support the Mountains and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness:
Keep the Cascades clean. Pack it out, respect the trails, and consider pitching in to local stewardship organizations like the Leavenworth Mountain Association (LMA).
